Belmont Towers
Parsons, Kansas
This seven story structure is constructed of cast-in-place reinforced concrete beams and columns with exterior brick veneer.
The structure sustained damage from high winds in the Spring of 2000. Per FEMA Records, “On April 19, 2000, two supercell thunderstorms produced damaging tornadoes in southeastern Kansas. Hardest hit was Parsons, Kansas (population 11,924) where the tornado went through the center of town.”
The damage resulting in excessive cracking of many of the exterior concrete columns. Corrosion of the embedded reinforcing steel resulted from the moisture intrusion into the columns thru the exterior cracks. The structural solution included reconstruction of selected columns as well as concrete repair to others.
